As some of you may know, during the past couple months, I have been part of a campaign in conjunction with Mom Spark Media, where a group of bloggers were sent a three month gift Premier Membership with The California Wine Club in exchange for us to write about the wines and share our experiences with our readers. My blog from the first month’s shipment can be found here and my blog from the second month’s shipment can be found here. I recently received my third and final shipment and had the opportunity to taste the two wines sent to me.
This month, I received a 2010 Viognier from Tangent Winery and a 2009 Mourvèdre-Syrah-Grenache blend from Trenza Winery. Both wineries are located in California’s Central Coast. Tangent Winery is located in San Luis Obispo while Trenza is located in Santa Barbara. Both are sister wineries along with Baileyana, Zocker, and Cadre Wineries; all located in the Central Coast. All the wineries are under the Niven Family Wine Estates. Now on to the best part, the wines!
The Tangent 2010 Viognier contains grapes that come from various vineyards in San Luis Obispo and undergoes stainless steel fermentation. In the glass, the wine pours a lovely soft straw color and has a fragrant nose of honeysuckle, citrus, melon, and tropical notes. On the palate, there are flavors of tropical fruit, namely pineapple and hints of guava. I also got some white peach notes as well as nectarine notes. All the lively flavors are balanced out by fresh acidity. This wine was very pleasant to drink and hit the spot on a hot summer day. Outside of the California Wine Club, the wine sells for $17 on the winery’s website ($13.60 for winery club members). Members of the California Wine Club can order the wine for $10.99 per bottle. Not a bad price at all for an enjoyable white wine, perfect for a hot summer day.
The second wine in the shipment was from Trenza Winery. It was their 2009 Santa Barbara County Mourvèdre-Syrah-Grenache (MSG) blend. I really love these three Rhone varietals when blended together, so I was looking forward to tasting this wine. The breakdown of the wine is: 44% Mourvèdre, 31% Syrah, and 25% Grenache. In the glass, the wine poured a deep garnet color. I got some beautiful aromatics of lush dark fruits such as boysenberry, blueberry, and blackberry. Hints of tobacco, vanilla, and baker’s chocolate, and oak were also present. I also picked up on some soft floral notes. There is a lot going on, on the palate. The juicy dark fruits are dominant and then comes the espresso and dark chocolate flavors followed by a spicy, and peppery finish that is long. The wine has a very firm tannic structure and is full-bodied. The layers develop more and more as the wine is allowed time to open up. We paired the wine with Kobe beef sliders. This wine is hearty and will go well with burgers, steak, stews, and any meat-based dish. I really enjoyed this wine. The California Wine Club sells the wine for $13.99 per bottle for members, compared to it’s $30 suggested retail price. That is quite the deal for a delicious wine to pair with a great dinner. I was unable to find any pricing information on the wine from the winery or on the web.
Both the wines in this final shipment were very enjoyable. Each of the first two shipments contained a couple wines that I didn’t care for and wouldn’t recommend based on my own palate. All the wine for all three months was from the Central Coast. It would have been nice to see some selections from Napa and Sonoma. I would recommend a membership in the California Wine Club to people who are just getting into wine and want to start exploring the world of wine. The California Wine Club is very inexpensive compared to other wine clubs and gives discounts on any wines that you receive in your club shipment and wish to re-order. If you haven’t taken advantage of their current offer to my readers, there is still time. If you sign up for a new Premier Club Membership, you will get a special bonus of four bottles of wine.
